Former England boss Steve McClaren is in line for a return to management at former club FC Twente.
The Dutch team sacked manager Co Adriaanse on Tuesday.
Adriaanse, 64, who took charge last summer, leaves with FC Twente third in the league after losing their last three matches of 2011.
McClaren, 50, won the Eredivisie title with FC Twente in 2009-10, but has been without a club since since resigning as Nottingham Forest manager in October.
He quit FC Twente in 2010 after two seasons in charge to join German side Wolfsburg, but was sacked in February 2011 before spending just 112 days in charge of Forest.
A statement on the FC Twente website read: "Co Adriaanse, the coach of FC Twente, is leaving the Enschede club. FC Twente have terminated his contract with immediate effect.
"Chairman Joop Munsterman will explain the departure later today."
FC Twente Assistants Alfred Schreuder, Boudewijn Pahlplatz and Youri Mulder will provisionally take charge of training.
